This instrument is used to determine the total sulfur content in coal and heavy oil. A sample is combusted in a dry air atmosphere, the gases evolved go to a coulomb reaction chamber containing platinum dust electrodes and current sensing probes. A small current is produced as the sulfur reacts with the electrodes, the current is balanced and is equivalent to the amount of sulfur present in coal. The analysis process is automatic after the weighing up and the insertion of the sample into the furnace.
